Work Objectives The proposed work aims to build on ongoing developments in 3GPP 5G NR-NTN standardization towards a converged and fully virtualised secure 5G-NTN connectivity platform as the enabler for aerial networks and services, such as IFBC (Inflight broadband connectivity), among others.
Within this vision, we aim to address the enhanced connectivity to enable ultra-high speed, low-latency, and large extended coverage to support personalized services.
The planned work aims to address intelligent RIS-assisted communications for out-of-coverage plane connectivity.
The work should consider design challenges such required number of RIS elements and phasing towards enhancing throughput and ensuring sustainable communications.
The design should consider smart solutions to provide autonomous tracking and cascaded RIS solution for more challenging use-cases involving 3D mobility and large coverage zones.
Place of Work The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Dr.
Joaquim Manuel Camões Sobral de Bastos.
Duration 12 months, with the possibility of renewal.

Monthly Salary € according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.

t/apoios/bolsas/valores).

Admission Requirements Research grants are intended.
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.
Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD degree/programme in electrical and computer engineering, informatics and telecommunications engineering, or equivalent.
The candidates must have.
- general expertise on 5G/6G systems, including satellite connectivity, new radio and 6G developments.
- complemented by significant experience on RIS assisted communications and modelling, and on optimization tools that include machine learning (reinforcement and deep learning) -proven experience on experimental modelling tools such as Matlab or NS2/NS3, supported by strong software programming skills in either Matlab, Python, or C/C++.
