REMIX FINE ART: FLIP CLASSIC ARTWORKS
Descrição da oferta de emprego
Co-opt one artwork and ‘Flip It’ Picasso said at some point in this life that good artists copy but great artists’ steal.
Apparently, a similar comment was said by T.
.
Eliot about poetry… immature poets imitate but mature poets steal.
These figures are considered amongst the greatest creative minds in Western culture, not afraid to contest a perception of originality that centres on an ideal of sovereign consciousness, a self-generating dynamo of creativity - pure and untainted by influence.
We all have anxiety about influence and in many cases, it can be well placed, but Austin Kleon used the analogy of genetics to talk about creativity in his book ‘Steal like an artist’.
It makes sense to consider every human being as a sum greater than the genetic source of a mother and father’s genetic material.
He goes on to say… “You are in fact a mashup of what you choose to let into your life.
You are the sum of your influences…” Mark Ronson in his Ted talk about the remix, talked about the advent of the sampler 30 years ago and its impact upon music, taking us on a journey from Doug E.
Fresh and Slick Rick (early 80’s Hip hop) to Mylee Cyrus ().
But in fact, sampling; copying, transforming, and combining could be argued as one of the foundational principles of creativity A DJ copies, repeats, speeds up or slows down tempo, changes pitch, layers elements, uses filters – these are all strategies you can use to make your pieces.
Your task over the module requires you to choose a photograph/artwork selected from a key text drawn from any module at Level 4 (last year) or Level 5 and cite this.
Page number etc.
You must research and become familiar with your selected work.
Find out about the Photographer/artist who made it, consider how it’s been made, look at its formal qualities, is there anything about the characteristics of this particular work that draws you in.
It might be the subject or content, the colour pallet that’s been used, a shape, perspective or form you’ve identified, it’s materiality (what it’s made of).
You will then use this to create your own remix of the work.
And remember a remix is a transformation – we ain’t talking cover songs, or pastiche - you’ve got to ‘FLIP IT! You may produce this in any manner you choose however you must use one or more of the workshops during the execution of your remix.
So initiate conversations with our technicians to devise your piece, remember you can arrange access to the workshops out of timetabled hours that you may need them to complete the task.

Here’s a detailed idea example for your assignment, focusing on the theme of “The Remix.
Co-opt one artwork and ‘Flip It’” with a specific photographer and work.
### Idea Example.
Remixing David LaChapelle's “Awakening” #### Selected Artwork - **Artist**.
David LaChapelle - **Title**.
"Awakening" () - **Key Text Reference**.
[Cite the specific text and page number where the artwork is discussed.
#### Concept David LaChapelle is renowned for his vibrant, surreal, and often provocative photographs that challenge societal norms and reflect on contemporary culture.
"Awakening" features a blend of religious iconography and pop culture, showcasing a dramatic and colorful scene with layered meanings.
For your remix, you could reinterpret "Awakening" to comment on the modern-day "awakening" of social issues, such as climate change, mental health, or the impact of technology on human relationships.
#### Execution.
How to Flip It 1.
**Research**.
- Study LaChapelle’s style, focusing on his use of color, composition, and cultural commentary.
- Analyze the formal qualities of "Awakening," including its vibrant color palette, dramatic lighting, and the juxtaposition of sacred and profane elements.
2.
**Visual Transformation**.
- **Theme Shift**.
Instead of focusing on religious awakening, shift the theme to environmental awakening.
Create a scene that illustrates the urgency of climate change, using similar dramatic lighting and composition.
- **Character and Setting**.
Recreate the central figures but dress them in eco-conscious attire (e.
., clothing made from recycled materials) or depict them in a natural setting suffering from pollution (e.
., a cityscape with smog).
- **Mixed Media Elements**.
Incorporate digital elements, such as graphic overlays showcasing statistics about climate change, or use augmented reality (AR) features to allow viewers to interact with the piece via a smartphone app.
3.
**Workshops**.
- Utilize the **Print Room (AVA.
.
)** to create large-scale prints of your images.
- Use the **Sculpture Workshop (AVA.
.
)** to create physical elements that accompany your photographs, like a 3D-printed model of a polluted landscape.
4.
**Collaboration**.
- Consider collaborating with students from other disciplines (e.
., graphic design) to incorporate text or animation into your piece, enhancing the message.
#### Documentation - **Process and Research Log**.
Document your research on LaChapelle, your sketches, and the evolution of your ideas.
Include reflections on how your work diverges from and builds upon the original piece.
- **Reflective Evaluation**.
Write about what you learned from LaChapelle’s work and the remixing process, how you felt about transforming the theme, and what challenges you faced.
Reflect on potential future developments, such as exploring other social issues through similar artistic lenses.
#### Final Submission - **Digital PDF Portfolio**.
Compile at least 5 images, including your remix of "Awakening," behind-the-scenes shots of your process, and any mixed media elements.
- **Artist Statement**.
Clearly articulate your concept, your interpretation of LaChapelle’s work, and how your remix comments on contemporary social issues.
### Conclusion This idea allows you to engage deeply with David LaChapelle’s "Awakening" while transforming its message to address relevant issues today.
By employing vibrant visuals and thoughtful commentary, your work can both honor the original and provide a fresh perspective on the theme of awakening.
