LEARNING-BASED VISUAL REPRESENTATION PHD GRANTS

Summary Two research positions for two Research Grants (“Bolsas de Investigação“) are open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project DARING – Deep compression.

This project is funded by FCT/MCTES through national funds and when applicable co-funded EU funds under the PTDC/EEI-COM/ project reference.
These scholarships are for candidates that aim to work on innovative topics related to coding, processing, and assessment of visual data.
This research aims to enhance the understanding of how visual data can be effectively analyzed, compressed, and evaluated, particularly in contexts where accuracy and quality are critical.
Potential applications include multimedia, medical imaging, autonomous systems, and more.
The work to be conducted with this research grant is in the context of the DARING project financed by Fundação para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (FCT), which has the objective of advancing existing solutions in the learning-based image coding field.
Work Objectives The main objective of this work is to study, design, implement and disseminate (in top-level IEEE publications) novel algorithms to advance existing solutions in the visual coding and quality assessment fields.
Place of Work The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor João Ascenso.
Duration 5 months.
Start date.
October 1st, or soon thereafter.
Monthly Salary € according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (https://www.

The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Admission Requirements Research grants are intended.
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.
In what concerns the admission requirements for these research grants in particular.
- Enrolled in a Ph.
.
course of electrical and computer engineering; - background on quality assessment and visual compression; - knowledge of Python/C++ programming; and - fluent in English with good skills in technical writing and presenting.
Required Documents Cover letter explaining the interest in the position and relevant background, detailed Curriculum Vitae with transcripts, Copy of the relevant certificates (Copy of the Degree Certificate(s), if applicable); and proof of enrollment (or proof of acceptance) in a higher education course or declaration of honour confirming that complies with the conditions to enroll in the required/preferable higher education course.
