EVENT AWARE SENSOR COMPRESSION M.SC. GRANT

Summary A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project O--LX-15.

Event-based imaging, also known as neuromorphic imaging, is a recent visual information paradigm that relies on novel sensing and computing techniques that mimic how biological systems acquire and process visual information.
In this paradigm, visual sensors do not capture and transmit images/frames at fixed time intervals, but rather operate on a different principle.
individual pixels asynchronously respond to changes in the amount of incident light, resulting in a stream of asynchronous events.
Therefore, the obtained visual data stream is sparse which makes it suitable for scenarios where very high temporal resolutions are desirable, notably in the acquisition of fast and dynamic scenes with high accuracy and low latency.
Moreover, event-based imaging can efficiently handle uncontrolled lighting conditions (e.
.
high dynamic range) and low-power consumption.
This new visual information paradigm may therefore potentiates several advantages in many applications, such as in industrial automation, visual surveillance, augmented reality, automotive and mobile environments, drones and other applications which require fast response, high-dynamic range or low-power consumption.
Work Objectives The main objective of this work is to study, design, implement and disseminate (in top-level IEEE publications) novel algorithms that compress data obtained from event-based sensors.
Place of Work The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor João Ascenso.
Duration 6 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT).
Start date.
November 1st, or soon thereafter.
Monthly Salary € according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (https://www.

Admission Requirements Research grants are intended.
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.
In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular.
- Enrolled in a M.
c.
degree course of computer science or electrical and computer engineering; - Background on machine learning or data science; - Knowledge of Python/C++ programming, and - Fluent in English with good skills in technical writing and presenting.
